The Nursery

A good gardener is a true environmentalist; recycling organic material into compost is a good example.

But seeds can be sown and while pruning a gardener can take cuttings. This thought is the base of the idea to start a small spin-off nursery.

Mid 2002 a greenhouse and shade nets were erected. Surplus irrigation water in the greenhouse is filtered and channeled into the same water reservoir as in which winter rainwater (of the roof) is directed, thus (re-)using natural resources in the most sustainable and cost effective manor.

We mix our own potting and seed soils without chemicals or unnatural additives.

The nursery has a fine collection of succulents with an emphasis on (Southern) African succulents as Aloes; Euphorbias; Crassulas; Mesembs; Adeniums a.s.o.

The collection is ever changing; always depending on the availability of plantmaterial in our gardens and the mood of the gardeners.

Some people think that cacti (not indigenous to Africa!!!) will grow virtually everywhere in South Africa.

Landscapers in the Cape Town area reckon that, in their area, at least 60 to 70 percent of the cacti planted in the unprotected open air die within months due to weather- en soil conditions; insufficient information by nurseries and occassionally even by hidden diseases. Also a significant percentage of indigenous succulents are unable to survive the Capetonian climate which explains why Kirstenbosch National botanical Garden in Cape town has the majority of its succulent collection in a conservatory.

For us the reason to provide every customer with adequate info; we sometimes even refuse to sell a certain plant. Please don’t be angry with us in such a case; we rather see you back with a happy face!!
