About Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa (FTTSA)

FTTSA is an independent non-profit organisation that promotes equitable and sustainable tourism development in South Africa . FTTSA carries out a range of awareness raising activities and facilitates a voluntary certification initiative that awards a special Trademark (label) to tourism establishments in South Africa that comply with Fair Trade principles and criteria.

FTTSA was initiated by the South African Country Office of the IUCN-World Conservation Union. This entailed the facilitation of a pilot project during 1999-2001, known as the “Fair Trade in Tourism Initiative” (FTTI), which tested the extent to which global Fair Trade in Tourism principles and concepts could be applied to the South African context.

FTTSA officially launched its certification Trademark in June 2002, marking the first time that any country or organisation has created a Fair Trade label or hallmark for the tourism sector. The first round of FTTSA products was certified in October 2003. To date, a total of 18 establishments including three community-based enterprises have qualified for FTTSA certification.

FTTSA's Values are encapsulated in the 6 Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa principles: Fair Share, Democracy, Respect, Reliability, Transparency and Sustainability.

The main two FTTSA's Objectives are to Improve awareness and understanding of FTTSA within specific Target Groups and to c ontribute to the wider transformation and sustainability of the tourism industry in South Africa .

TTSA's core business is the facilitation of a voluntary certification programme that awards a special Trademark or label to tourism enterprises that meet specific criteria. To qualify, applicants must comply with Fair Trade criteria, which include:

• Fair wages and working conditions;

• Fair operations and purchasing;

• Fair distribution of benefits;

• Ethical business practice; and

• Respect for human rights, culture and environment.
